what specific type of anime do you like? how about death note, grave of the fireflies, samurai x / rurouni kenshin movie, ghost in the shell ? all of those are pretty adult but also very good to watch.

grave of the fireflies made me cry. i hardly ever cry over a movie but i balled my eyes out to that one.
i like anime that is well made and not a bunch of still people and scenery with just mouths moving and close ups of their mouths moving.

Last Exile and Gantz - both excellent recommendations and not for kids.

i dug Last Exile although the ending kind of came up sort of abruptly and i was like huh? but still worth checking out.

Kinos Journey is a pretty rad, albeit short, series...very taoist

for a movie Tokyo Godfather's was excellent

and Kakurenbo is a pretty random short...dug it though

The last episode should have done a better job in revealing that everyone was living in an artificially made hourglass world (which is why hourglasses are shown so many times in the series) whose control system, Exile, was in the middle at the thinnest part (the Grand Stream). Exile is also the ship that would take the inhabitants of the world back to Earth. The Four Guilds were each descendants of the rulers of the original generation ship and entrusted each with 1/4 of the passwords to reactivate Exile.

That's why the only way from Anatoray to Disith was to fly via the Grand Stream. The two countries were in different "bulbs".

if you feel like having your brain messed with, you could go with the work of Satoshi Kon

I think Tokyo Godfathers is the least crazed of his offerings, Paprika, Perfect Blue and Paranoia Agent are definitely great and definitely not for the kiddies either.

I came to this thread late, but I have to say I'm still thankful for it.

Since the days of Lain, Cowboy Beebop, Samurai Champloo, Last Exile... I've found little that I can sit through for more than a few episodes. I now have three new series to add to my que, though - thank you!

A few others that I would contribute to the discussion, although not for everyone, are Escaflowne (2000), RahXephon (2001), and Texhnolyze (2004).

El-Hazard, Maison Ikkoku, Kimagure Orange Road, Golden Boy, Outlaw Star, Brain Powerd, Dirty Pair, Sakura Wars, NieA_7, Macross..... I could go on and on. You'll notice though that I tend to lean more towards old school stuff. I've been into anime for decades and consider the 80s stuff to be the "golden age" of anime. ^__^
