Almost missed the first episode of Death Note on Adult Swim. Apparently it aired on Oct 20th. But you can still catch it on the adult swim site. They will keep the most current episode available here:

Death Note is an AMAZING anime. I liked the Japanese voices better, but the English dubs are not bad.

Re: Death Note on Adult Swim
Wed, October 24, 2007 - 8:49 AMI've already read the entire manga, and enjoyed it immensely, but I don't think I can watch it over again as an anime.
I always thought it was hilarious that the Yagami's would sit and eat dinner with an invisible Ryuk hanging out, looking like this weird amalgation of biker, clown, and gorilla, perpetually grinning with his lazy eyes. It had such a David Lynch "horrible things hiding under the veneer of everyday life" sort of theme.

Thu, October 25, 2007 - 9:05 AMI still perfer the manga over the English anime (I have yet to watch the Japanese version). In fact, I don't want to watch the rest of the English version because when I read the manga, I formed a specific voice for each character (based on their characterization, dialogue, actions, etc) and the English version doesn't fit the perception of the characters I formed. Brad Swaile as Light Yagami...no, I personally cannot see him as Light Yagami. When I was growing up, I watched the English version of Gundam Wing where Brad Swaile played Quatre R. Winner and it was (and still is) one of my favorite anime shows. Because of that, I can't associate Brad Swaile playing anyone but Quatre and when I watched the episode and Light first spoke, I didn't hear Light...I heard Quatre. And Quatre is not Light Yagami. There is so much more to Light and his genius/insanity that I personally don't think Brad Swaile can do. Heh, if I choose to tune in more, Mr. Swaile might surprise me, perhaps he has improved since Quatre...but I'll have to really force myself to watch because currently when I hear Light, I hate it that I don't hear Light from the manga...I hear Quatre.

Re: Death Note on Adult Swim
Thu, November 1, 2007 - 10:19 PMI finished the series in subtitles last week. Here is my take now that I have seen it all:
Death Note is one of the better anime I've seen. The plot is complex, with lots of twists. It has amazingly good start, and it keeps going for many episodes. Then it lulls a bit near the middle, and I especially got bored after.....(how to say without spoiling?) ......they introduce Near. (if youve seen it, you know what Im talking about) But it catches back on, for a strong finish. Lots of themes going on!
The male characters are very interesting. I love reading books or watching tv with shades of grey in the plot and characters. I like how (most) people stop rooting for the protagonist at some point in time. It is interesting how that point is different for everyone. The main female character (Misa) was that terrible type of anime girly-girl, which to me is probably the worst thing about this (and many other) anime. The other female characters were not much better. (ugh.).....(OT- If you also like shades of grey in your reading, check out the Song of Ice and Fire series by George RR Martin...VERY awesome!)
I loved the music and the voice acting. The English dubs are not as good, I don't think. My main problem with the English dubs is that Ryuk doesn't sound as "amused" as he should.
Synopsis (pasted from anime-source.com ) :
Ryuuk is a Shinigami (angel of death) who was bored with his job of killing humans with his Death Note, a notebook that has the power to kill anyone who you write their name in the book. One day he decides to drop his Death Note in the human world and watch what happens.
Light Yagami is a brilliant high school student not only at the top of his class but top of Japan as well. This prodigy finds the dropped Death Note and finds out its powers. He decides to use it to create a better world by killing all the criminals!
Pretty soon the world is in awe as notorious criminals all start dying of heart attacks, Interpol and L the world's greatest detective start on the case to find the mass murderer. -

Light, L, Near, and Mello are interesting. All of the cops are a bunch of dumbbuckets, except for Mogi.
>>I like how (most) people stop rooting for the protagonist at some point in time. <<
Ugh. I was against Light from Chapter 1. He was always purely evil to me.
It's funny. I picked up the first manga volume and read the first chapter, where Ryuk is explaining the premise of what a Death Note is to Light. At that moment I thought "OMG, what did I pick up? This is going to be another stupid formula manga..." Then Light says that not only did he experiment with the book, he's written a bunch of criminal's names down already. That was so unexpected to me, I was hooked after that.
>>The main female character (Misa) was that terrible type of anime girly-girl, which to me is probably the worst thing about this (and many other) anime. <<
About everyone in the story exists as a tool for either Light, L, Near, or Mello. That's just the way how these "greater" characters perceive other people in their world. The story is just one big game of go between these competitors. -

Re: Death Note on Adult Swim
Fri, November 2, 2007 - 11:14 AMCool thoughts!
To me, it was not so much that Light was evil. It was the whole "absolute power" thing. He was a perfectly decent human being before the DN, and again, when he had forgotten about it. He was tempted by his idealism, and thought to make the world a better place. If you had gotten a DN, wouldn't you kill off at least some dictators and war-mongers? Then, the power went to his head. Although I saw the warning signs, I didn't completely dislike him until he killed the (non-criminal) FBI agents.
And just because the character is viewed as a tool by another character, doesn't mean that they have to be cutesy types who refer to themselves by name and go ga-ga over a boy. My favorite female character in this anime was the FBI agents fiancee, and she was only in for about 2 episodes maybe. -

Re: Death Note on Adult Swim
Fri, November 2, 2007 - 7:36 PMI don't see Light as being evil either. As a completely geeky analogy, the Death Note to Light was like the One Ring was to Gollum. The Death Note changed him and briefly I believe readers see the real Light after Light releases himself from the Death Note. Note the scene right after he gives up the Death Note and note the difference in Light's eyes and his whole appearance...that I believe is the real Light Yagami, a normal, sweet-looking, highly intelligent young man who wants to help his father rid the world of the evil Kira. I think that side of Light would be abhorred to know that he and his Kira aspect were that same (maybe same isn't the right way to word it...more like that the real Light would be abhorred to know that he had the ability to become so evil). And I agree with Natasha, I know that if I had a Death Note...I would do the same thing Light so ideally wanted in the beginning when the taint of the Death Note wasn't so strong, but unlike Light I'd end up getting caught and could never think so far ahead...
Sometimes I love Light and sometimes I hate Light, but that's the genius of his character...

I think that Near, as part of his endgame speech made a very good point. If Light was a good human being, and he tried using the Death Note, he would have been shocked and never used it again. Near also pointed out that he could understand the perspective of someone selfish who used the Death Note for personal gain. But Light was nothing more than a murderer, and the Death Note was the worst murder weapon in the world.
And no, I wouldn't use the Death Note to kill off people I didn't approve of. I don't pretend to know how the world works. For instance Ben Stein, who is a smart person and a Nixon supporter, said that if Nixon hadn't had to resign, he would have stopped the Khmer Rouge. I don't approve of Nixon, but I can see that the world is a lot more gray than black and white.

Well, I thought Misa was amusing in that she was the quintessential "cutesy" girl, yet she was also able to be a murderer and to outsmart Light a couple of times. I thought that it's also funny that even though she made the eye deal twice, she also inherited the lifespan of Rem, so she could possibly live hundreds of years.
