My blogs are often about anime, but I thought it would make more sense to past anime blogs here (most my friends dont watch it like I do). Feel free to post here about stuff you've been watching and/or thoughts you have had

I have finished with Claymore. It was VERY good. (more info: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clay...nime#Anime )Hope they are coming out with more though because the first season did not have a conclusive ending, and it looks like there are currently no more manga.

Have been watching Peacemaker. It is just ok, but it is free on AnimeOnDemand channel, so I will keep watching it. I don't get the entire plot, because I don't know enough about Japanese history. The anime takes place in a real historical group called the Shinsengumi, during the Meiji era (late 19th century). Another anime I a have started watching, Rorouni Kenshin/ Samurai X also takes place during this era. For both these anime I can never tell who is fighting for what. I think there is some sort of civil war, and some people support the newly restored emperor or shogunate and others don't, and people are either for or against Isolationism or expansion and the westerners who are coming into the country now. I could be wrong though.... Kenshin is better than Peacemaker, but I haven't seen much of it yet. I am borrowing the DVDs from a friend (the DM of a D&D game I've joined) , but I accidentally grabbed the wrong ones.

Still watching Blood+. I really like it, but watching it is going slow, because instead of downloading it I am DVRing it on AdultSwim and they only show one new episode a week.

Also watched one episode each of: Ergo Proxy (confusing, but good. will probably watch more), Mushi-shi (beautiful and interesting, but I hear it gets repetitive), Kino no Tabi (Will definitely watch more), and FLCL / FoolyCooly (wtf?!?! it is both mind-numbing, and makes no sense, but is somehow addicting). So I have to decide which I want to finish first. I think I will go with FLCL because there are only about 6 episodes, so it should be quick.

Re: Claymore. I did pick up the first manga volume, but it failed to hook me. If I hear good things though, I'll watch it.

I've currently picked up the whole series of _The Vision of Escaflowne_ (not the godawful Fox Kids cut) for a song of $40. I've seen 4 episodes and have yet to form an opinion, except that I love the steampunk Guymelfs.

For FLCL you should watch Evangelion first because it shares some of the themes.

I couldn't stand Evangelion. I know thats an unpopular opinion, but definitely not my type of anime.

In the meantime, I got some movies from a library. The library closest to my house does not have many videos (it is a branch library), but I had to go to the main branch to get a book, and since I was there anyway.....lol!

Howl's Moving Castle was awesome! It was sweet and fun and interesting, and all-around the wonderful work that is Miyazaki. Some things didn't make sense to me, but thats to be expected with anime.

Blood: The Last Vampire was terrible. I enjoy Blood+ and cannot see how such a wonderful series came out of this boring waste of time. Here is the plot in its entirety: Saya kills terropterans (in blood+ it's chiropterans. I don't know what the difference is). The big reveal? Saya is a vampire. The end. wtf? How does this movie get on people's "favorites" list???

Will watch Grave of the Fireflies sometime this weekend. I am expecting it to be good.

Bleach is still in a dull phase, but it seems like it might pick back up. I swear that anime is the biggest roller coaster. Sometimes it rocks! Other times.......well.....

Yay for an hour-long Naruto! I swear they drag that show out as much as they can to make the most money without losing viewers. In response, I highly recommend the humourous Abridged Naruto episodes. Each episode is condensed into 5 minutes, and then overlaid with funny dubs. They are up on youtube for the curious.

Evangelion was cool when it was big robots kicking angel ass, but when it got into all the metaphysical introspective crap I lost interest REAL QUICK.

Vitually anything by Miyazaki rocks. I love Nausica, and Howls moving castle and own Spirited Away, Porko Rosco as well.

I'm kind of neutral on Evangelion. I feel like its good and bad points weigh each other out. I do think Pen-Pen is the world's coolest pet.

          >>Howl's Moving Castle was awesome! It was sweet and fun and interesting, and all-around the wonderful work that is Miyazaki. Some things didn't make sense to me, but thats to be expected with anime. <<

I thought _HMC_ was kind of tepid compared to _Spirited Away_. Maybe it's just because I saw the English dub, which I normally don't do.

I actually enjoyed B:TLV. What can I say? :) I love the intensity of Saya's emotions in a child's body. I love that exchange between agents at the beginning of the movie ("Hey! This guy isn't changing back!") I love the use of chiaroscuro throughout the film. I love Saya's lonliness and her silence and adrupt violence when slaying the Chiroptean girl in the hospital.

Watched Grave of the Fireflies and Rurouni Kenshin movie last weekend both were most excellent.

Grave of the Fireflies was just beautiful. In fact that word isn't even good enough for it, since I use it on other anime that is not nearly as beautiful as this one. It is about two siblings trying (and ultimately failing) to survive in WWII Japan. I cried.

Rurouni Kenshin was another VERY good anime. It is about a boy turned master swordsman assassin during the Meiji Restoration. I liked the un-romanticized fighting. Again, I cried.

These two are moving to the top of my favorite anime list.

        More on Vision of Escaflowne

        Thu, December 13, 2007 - 12:06 PM
I'm now around episode 9 and I must say, this series is shaping up to be as good as some fans say it is.

        Good Things
        -----------------
Hitomi is one of the best female protagonists that I've seen in anime. She's got guts, both socially (standing up to a crush/social superior and insisting that he take her psychic visions seriously) and athletically (clearing a long jump with certain death below).

        Yoko Kanno soundtrack. 'Nuf said.

The "join the dark side" theme that goes on with Van and his evil brother.

The characters display nuances to their personalities in subtle ways to help reveal who they are. For instance, when Allan defeats Van in a sparring match, even though he's critiquing Van's moves in his head, he doesn't say anything to Van after he disarms him. Van, in turn, also doesn't say anything but knows that he's going to need a lot more experience.

The giant robot combat goes pretty well. :)

        Bad Thing
        ---------------

The pacing. Escaflowne was originally conceived to be 39 episodes and was cut down to 24. So the viewer is whisked about to these beautiful locales in a well planned fantasy world only to have something immediately happen that causes the protagonists to flee to the next location. I would have liked to see more of Fanelia and Asturia.
