Bleach Movie in Theaters

Appleseed Ex Machina

I can't be the only one that's seen this, can I?

This is a sequel to the 2004 Appleseed as opposed to the even earlier version but with John Woo's name stamped on it. While the rendering tech has improved I still think I was more impressed with the visuals and story of Appleseed. I'll have to watch it again now. The plot is about some secret group trying to destroy future perfect city Olympus but the story is about Briarios's humanity, he's the cybernetic modified guy with the metal bunny ears if you forgot. His DNA is used to clone a bioroid who is then partnered with him and Deunan.

I enjoyed it but found it missing some of the complexity of Appleseed and Ghost in the Shell.

The Karas AMV

Anime Music Videos (AMV) are created by hobbyist who take a popular song and add it on top of existing Japanese Animation footage to give the Video a new and more exciting feel. The Karas AMV was created around the idea of taking found sources and samples from existing Japanese Animation titles and combining it with performances highly skilled musicians and Turntablist to recreate the film sound effect work creating a frenetic, hyper real approach to sound design. After the original sound track was removed, the music (Bass performance and Ableton sounds by J of The Opposite of Faith) was written and recorded into Ableton Live- every other voice, movement, moment and mood was created on Turntables and through Turntable mixing techniques (cutting, scratching, transforming) while performing to the video. The approach was expanded by having the Turntablist (DJ Quest and DJ Cplus) manipulating the Dave Smith Evolver and the Korg Kaoss Pad through the DJ mixers and MIDI control. Performances (Bass, Turntables) were record through the EMU 1616 into Ableton Live and warped, edited and combined there. The final mixdown was performed in Ableton Live and Mastered using Summit Audio Tube EQs.

This is the first in series of creative Music/Video/Art Projects by the Opposite of Faith-creativity without compromise…

Has anyone been watching "Claymore"?

I have been watching a lot of 'brainy' anime lately or anime low on action factor so this has been a fun romp for me. Though the gushing blood fountains are a little tired as is the whole 'narration of my life history and evil deeds before I kill you' deal with the enemies, but hey. ;) Being a woman myself I tend to lean toward anime with strong and/or leading female characters, so that's one point for Claymore. The animation isn't bad, and the evolution of Clare has been interesting enough, though not as solid as it could be.

Thoughts? Opinions?

Please help me find anything from PineSalad Productions that I don't currently have.

I do have the 4 Dirty Pair fandub episodes on VHS, but I understand that they created other fandubs as well. Robotech, and... rumors of a BGC parody, or...?

Also, are there any other Fan Dubs that have reached this level of quality? I have about 8 different ones from other groups, and some are good, but for me, Pinesalad is still the best.

New York Anime Festival this weekend- my first anime con.

hi folks,
thought there may be some of you who are seasoned anime convention goers.
sooo just wondering if you have any advice and/or suggestions on being at, going too and participating in an anime convention.
I am going for all three days.

I am still debating if I will indeed cosplay for saturday only. it's really cold here, it would be my first time to cosplay too. also my costume isn't a specific anime character. it will be anime/japanese style but not a specific character.

anyone else going?
I think this one being the first here will have more tri-state area goers then too many from places furthur away but who knows.

Okay, I've seen through to riku's change into a chiraptor from youtube... but then I was watching the dubbed on CN when it just dawned on me that why was it Deva who causes his change? He was kidnapped ages ago at the manor with the one legged girl. They were injecting the children and making them "mice"... what was he not infected then? But he did hear the music when some of the others didn't. What is he a dog?^^

On top of that... when did he become dumb? Entering Deva's thinking it was Saya... WTF? Saya doesn't sing... and doesn't have long hair. How could he have made that mistake?

Prices on anime

I saw a t-shirt at Dragon*Con a few years ago that said "ANIME: As Addictive As Drugs And Just As Expensive"

And of course it's true. The (legitimate) box set for Cowboy Bebop is, what? $200? Evangelion? $150? etc. And sure, you say, it's a lot of money, but you're also getting 13 hours of film, right? (30 min eps * 26 eps).

Perhaps, but then why can Fox (?) sell two seasons of The Family Guy for $30 and make mint on it? (Enough to bring the show back from the grave, I might add.)

I hate that most of the anime I buy isn't legitimate, but I really can't justify paying literally ten times as much for the licensed product. Every time I see those pricetags I think "Windfall Profit."

So I guess my question is--since bitching about prices is nothing new in an anime forum: "How much of your anime collection is (A) downloaded-only (B) bootleg DVDs (e.g. the $30 trigun box sets on eBay) (C) legitimate region 1 DVDs (D) [other? specify :) ]

Nausicaa: not that great

I tried to watch Nausicaa today but I fell asleep during it. Its loosely like mononoke, but the dialog is so bad. The characters constantly point out everything thats going on, when the viewer is smart enough to figure it out. The main character was pretty cool. The fighting/flying scenes and other things made no sense to me as I periodically woke up trying to watch it.

Kids might be able to sit through it, but not me.

X, Madlax, Requiem from the Darkness
Can anyone give me some opinions on these?
Here are some of my alltime favorite anime series/movies for comparison's sake:
Lain, Kino's Journey, Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, Perfect Blue and Paranoia Agent (and anything else by Satoshi Kon), some of the less kiddy-oriented Miyazaki stuff, and Neon Genesis Evangelion, Ninja Scroll, etc...

I tend to lean toward subbed...If its agood subbing group....Dattebayo, Bleach Society and Anbu are all good subbing groups....Dubbed irritates me in the respect that they move away from the original character lines and most of the time off the story plot all together.

that and Dubbing voice actors are always so flat in their intonations....in Japanese you can hear the feeling expressed in the words....eh ....just me though....

School Rumble

I just finished the 26 episodes of the first season today. It was a really fun series, with memorable main characters, clever humorous twists and dialogue, great soundtrack and a really happy atmosphere. If you're into the Romance Comedy genre or if you liked Onegai Teacher, GTO, Tenshi na Konamaiki or perhaps Midori no Hibi, I'd highly recommend it!

For those who have seen it: which was your favourite character? I really liked it Harima Kenji. Even if he's the typical delinquent turning good character, he was the heart of the anime in my opinion! I loved any instance in which he appeared. I also liked Yakumo: very similar to Sakaki-san from Azumanga Daioh, the strong, beautiful, silent type. Hehe...

I'd list favourite moments but they're too many to mention: Let's hear yours instead. ^~;

Non-Newbie Anime - Watch Escaflowne (the series) and Macross Plus (OVA)!!!

This is meant to go at the end of the 'Newbie Anime' thread, but I thought it important enough that I didn't want it to get lost in the pile of replies.

I'm a BIG fan of Kawamori Shoji (who wrote 'Escaflowne', directed 'Macross Plus' and was in charge of mecha design for SDF Macross, a.k.a. 'Robotech', someone can check me on these). If you haven't seen 'Escaflowne', 'Macross Plus' (or - God forbid - Robotech, but I can't imagine anyone here having missed that one), you MUST GO OUT THERE RIGHT NOW AND GET THEM! They are, quite simply, the best - that is, if you enjoy being totally engrossed in a story line to the point of losing touch with reality altogether.

(I also loved the original GiTS and NGE, but found 'Lain' a tad contrite and depressing, although stylistically perfect.)

And if you don't mind a little shoujo, 'Fushigi Yuugi' is another fabulous title.

'Now and Then, Here and There' is another relatively obscure title which you abolutely must check out.

Anyone have any other suggestions?

P.S. - And the 'Urotsukodoji' OVA is a great gift for your Valentine. ;p

This was originally included in my reply to 'Current favorites', but I got a little carried away - and seeing as it's obviously *not* a favorite, I thought it would be appropriate to repost it under its own heading. Anyway, it'd be a shame to waste all that vitriol. ;)

My friend bought me the Gantz season 1 box set. If season 1's anything to go by - avoid avoid avoid. The first few episodes are good, then it drags over the next 9 episodes as the characters agonize over moral and ethical issues which most people have figured out by the age of 4 - all the while being hunted down by monsters as they're trying to get out of the grasp of some kind of mysterious sphere! The premise and itself isn't so bad, but...by the end, you really are rooting for the monsters! It's also a total shonen anime. Nothing against shonen anime - I love a lot of it, but there's not much going on here but blood and boys with *really stupid* issues. I mean, really. It's the boy answer to the most vapid shoujo anime possible (I have no examples as I tend to avoid that, too, but you can guess what I mean).

Where did the writers come up with this crap?

The shame is that there is so much the writers could explore with the philosophical concepts inherent in the set up and the plot - however, I imagine they would have already touched upon them a little more if they wanted people to go beyond season 1 (rather than just, 'What the hell is that thing? Really, the dog trying to eat out the girl is the only piece of fanservice they got going - says a lot about their intended audience! (Not that I mind a little hentai, but really, when there's really *nothing else* on, am I supposed to be glad? It only serves to help me realize me of how bored I am of this anime. 'La Blue Girl' had a hell of a lot more substance.)

Maybe it employs some kind of minimalist plot schema (kind of like the meaning of 'yaoi' - 'no peak, no point, no problem' - without the bishounen) with which I'm not familiar.

Moreover, the animation looks like it's done in Flash or ToonBoom - and not done very well. It's all cell-shaded cg and...ack! Remember when people used to *draw*?

However, the music is much better than your standard anime theme fare.

Hi there. I always buy my dvds in Japantowns "Japan Video".They seem to have the best supply in town for anime. Other places include Kinokuniya books Amoeba, Tower ,Giant Robot which all are good but dont have a wide selection for sale.Where else does anyone shop for a good selection? I know online is the best way but Im wondering about local stores that carry the goods. Let me know if anyone out there has any good resources Thanks LoL Kristo

I skimmed through other anime shows and haven't found that I enjoy them all that much. I think it is in part due to the bad acting jobs or the obvious mouth movement discrepencies.

OK, I have been really digging this series. My only complaint is that the intro is so long.........You have your little girl diary entry, What happened last episode, the opening, The mystic tail of legend....then the episode......then what will happen in the next episode. So, the episode it self ends up being like 10 minutes long and by the time it comes on My attention has drifted. Is this the new trend in Anime. load the DVDs up with filler and nonsense? Is this just in the US or do they do this in Japan as well. Are there trying to stretch it out to sell more DVDs. What are your thoughts on the subject?

This Show just flat rocks...if you havent Bit'ed it yet you should if you have the Evil Limewire get it while its hot (Limewire and other free serves are sched. for execution by the GOV.) Some have panned at as reguritation of several themes woven together,DBZ, Yuyu, and Inuyasha to name a few...and while that is true for the first arc, it quickly gets interesting from Eps. 12 and up....good character creation nice flow of arc to arc and it shows more of japanese society and religion theory than americans have been exposed to in previous Anime.

I'm new to this world

I've seen Metropolis, Steamboy, Millenium Actress, Tokyo Godfathers, Spirted Away, and one whole series that I can't remember the name of. Something on a desert planet with a good/bad protagonist.

After reading here, my next stop is Lain. The local video places don't have a lot, unfortunately. But I'm hooked. Probably won't be a collector, but who knows.

We recently finished off Beck and Samurai Champloo. We've also gone through Magical Shopping Arcade Abenaboshi and Cowboy Bepop. Well after watching this, it became apparent that it must be tied into Metal Gear Solid somehow. Psychic powers, super suits, and enemy's with a gatling gun. Even the environments look like they were from metal gear solid 1 / 2. The story of noah's ark that controlled the weather was kind of eh. The fight sequences in the beginning of the movie were cool. I liked how it was all hand drawn and not like the newer animes. After awhile, I kind of lost it, and just fastforwarded to the end. It ends with a pull-back to outerspace and a view of the earth, so I'm thinking I didnt miss anything.

In one episode, Huey addresses a garden party to which his grandfather has been invited by the man who owns the company that holds the loan on their house: "Jesus was black, Ronald Reagan was the devil and the government is lying about 9/11." But the people he wants to provoke only find him adorable. "They're not worried about anything," he says in disgust. "They're rich. No matter what happens, they just keep applauding."

There's a poignancy there that works only because it's drawn, in a style inspired (like the strip itself) by Japanese comics and anime, and paced like a dream. Live actors would overwhelm the moment, turn it sitcomical. (The boys aren't even voiced by children but by actress Regina King.) And Huey is, after all, adorable, in his way — he's cousin to Charlie Brown and every other grade-school cartoon character given adult eloquence (and anxieties). At the same time King's performance catches the kid in him, which redoubles the poignancy.

Indeed, for all its button-pushing language, bad attitude, plain raunchiness and the novel sight of an 8-year-old wannabe-thug drawing a bead on the head of an old white man with a pellet gun, the show is a gentle one. As far as edginess, it's no match for "South Park," where a popular word for "feces" was famously bleeped 162 times in a single episode, pedophilia is considered a viable subject for satire and Kenny dies horribly in every episode. By the standards of Adult Swim — with its often plotless cartoons made of uncomfortable silence, aggressive banality and sometimes crude and even ugly graphics — the show is almost conventional: It has a graspable premise, trackable narrative, characters with some kind of sentimental attachment to one another. And though it is skeptical about humans' ability to smell even the coffee they brew themselves, there's nothing here more fundamentally disturbing than Homer Simpson's message to his children: "You tried your best and you failed miserably. The lesson is: Never try."

...Like the comics, cartoons are children's things made by adults who are not finished with children's things. The reason the best of them have cross-generational appeal is not that they contain jokes for adults and jokes for children but that everything in them represents that doubleness: The dumbest jokes are there for the adults too, just as the smarter ones are there for the kids who know enough to get them — and for the kids who don't, they stand for the fact that there are things still to know, that (pace Homer Simpson) there is something to aspire to: Bugs Bunny cool. And in the meantime, like Huey and Riley, you try to think for yourself. That's what the cartoons tell us.

Gundam Seed Destiny

I just d/l'ed the whole season complete with fansubs. 50 new episodes, and the whole thing took 4 days to d/l. It's hefty at less than 12 gigs. I watched the first few eps with rapt interest but i get the sneaky suspicion the writers thought they had an award-winning formula from the previous Gundam Seed series. It feels like a rehash, but it looks just wonderful!

Still, 1 ep a day is a nice way to comsume it!
